Carley Prestwich

Carley Prestwich
I used to think that home was the physical house I grew up in, but as I prepare myself to pull away from this place, I am starting to realize that home is not simply a building. It is not a neighborhood, a town or even the state. Home is simply where you feel peace in your heart. As I am approaching my time to leave this little town I grew up in, I have been making pod forms in relation to my changing views of home.
Pod forms, to me, are a metaphor for protection, safety, security and mystery. I explore forms that envelop and protect what is inside. Natural elements especially seeds, pods, insect eggs and cocoons are all things that find expression my work. As I’m working, I find that conceptual ideas are developing, and although I may begin with a specific idea in mind, the process of creating leads me to discover new ideas. My interest is in creating contrast and texture. By juxtaposing the smooth against texture, light against dark and dull with bright color I achieve the distinction I search for.  Along with using contrast, I work to exploit lines, edges and flow throughout my pieces.

Through these pieces I am creating the layers we wrap around ourselves to protect us from whatever we may fear; the encasing that gives us a sense of safety and peace in our heart.
